WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10 - 6:30PM - IDB, ENRIQUE IGLESIAS AUDITORIUM
It is my honor to invite you to participate in the Round Table and exhibition on Human Rights in Argentina “Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo: 30 years. Grandmothers of the children who were abducted as a method of political repression and never restored to their legitimate families.” This event will be held on December 10th, 2008, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the IDB, Enrique Iglesias Auditorium. It is being organized jointly with the President of the IDB, Luis Alberto Moreno, who will be opening the presentation.
As you may know, the repressive military dictatorship that ruled Argentina between 1976 and 1983 left terrible consequences, including 30,000 disappeared men and women. It has been estimated by human rights organizations that over 400 children of these disappeared persons were born in captivity and illegally given up for adoption. Most of these children are still unaware of their real identities.
I have invited Estela Carlotto, President of “Abuelas” (Grandmothers) of Plaza de Mayo, because through her dedication and that of all the “Abuelas”, 95 of these grandchildren have been identified and reunited with their birth relatives.
The current Argentine administration of President Cristina Kirchner believes that we have the moral and legal obligation to find these victims of the dictatorship and punish those who are keeping them from learning their true identity.
I am sure that after listening to Estela and enjoying the exhibition, you will help us in the painful search of these children still held by their parent’s murderers. For more information visit www.abuelas.org.ar/english/history.htm
We look forward to seeing you there and I would appreciate it if you could share this invitation with your friends and staff.
Sincerely,
Héctor Timerman
